Creative photographer

Posted: 20th May 2013 by James Walker Photography in creative photographer

As a creative Photographer it is always pleasing when your more wacky images see the light of day! This image came about by chance as I was walking on Teignmouth seafront. The girl exercises her dog by belting along the seafront on roller-skates. It looked great fun and I don’t believe any OAP’s were run over. I got this shot on her third pass. Shooting from a low angle directly into the hazy sun I managed to capture the moment, and sense of speed.
The image has been used full page by Psychologies magazine in the UK. Why? Probably because the image represents many of the things we crave for in life, fun, freedom, excitement, being able to escape in the moment.
I’ve got two dogs, but no roller-skates, can anyone help? Size 9……….

Property Photographer in Devon

Posted: 17th April 2013 by James Walker Photography in Architectural photographer, Property photographer

Property photographer in Devon

I am a leading property photographer in Devon photographing the top end properties for clients such as Knight Frank, Jackson Stops & Staff, Savills. With nineteen years experience and 750+ properties under my belt I have a wealth of experience as a property photographer in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. I regard my success as being a combination of the following;

Creative flair – Combining my skills as a landscape photographer and fine art photographer I seek to produce atmospheric images that have the ‘wow’ factor. Often it will be a single image that will sell a property. This maybe a view, landscape, or even an interior, an image that ‘wets the buyers appetite’.

Technical quality – Having studied photography and worked for many years using film I have technical ability to get it right ‘in camera’. The majority of film shot was transparency requiring precise exposure, accurate lighting, and a skilled use of filters to get the best results. I do not subscribe to the ‘fix it in photoshop’ attitude adopted by many photographers today.
My equipment includes the best cameras and lens made by Canon. I shoot only with the professional L series lens which give outstanding image quality. Known for my creative interior lighting I always carry with me an array of flash and tungsten lighting in order to create atmospheric images.

Attention to detail – Attention to detail is an important attribute for a property photographer. This can range from making sure all the windows are shut when shooting an exterior photo to planning in advance a photoshoot to coincide with a high tide. Here are a few do’s and don’ts for clients;

Do stripe the Lawns it always looks great in photos, but don’t cut it too short. Bald patches look naff!
Don’t walk on wet grass, your footprints may still be there at lunchtime.
Do clean the garden furniture, it is often the focal point in a photo.
Do trim (if necessary lower) hedges. High hedges don’t make for good view shots.
Do make sure cars, boats etc can be moved if required. I have seen just about everything over the years including;
A one tonne dumpy bag of gravel on a driveway, It doesn’t improve the exterior shot of a house!
A car with seized up brakes. The son at university, his car on the drive. Not good.
Do get in flowers, a bowl of fruit, etc
Do lay the dinning room table if you have good china and glass, don’t if you don’t!
Do lay the fire with kindling and firelighters. Don’t light it until asked, this is because there maybe exterior shots to do.

A can do approach! –
I will hang out of helicopters.
Arrive on location with a boat if required.
Climb to the top of a hill to get a long shot.
Whatever it takes! (just make me a cup of tea)

The brochure shown below was produced to market Stanborough House. It is a good example of a contemporary brochure that has been well designed with good use of my photography.

The Moult, Salcombe

Posted: 20th March 2013 by James Walker Photography in Aerial photographer, Architectural photography, Property photographer

The Moult, Salcombe
Devon commercial photographer James Walker was commissioned to photograph The Moult at Salcombe last autumn. Today sees the five million pound property come to the market. Probably the finest property on the Salcombe Estuary it enjoys commanding views over The Bar. James says,”The Moult is a wonderful period property enjoying a commanding position on the estuary. The gardens are beautiful with lovely views over the water. In nineteen years as a property photographer in SW England it is hard to think of another property that compares!”

Commercial Photographer in Devon

Posted: 13th March 2013 by James Walker Photography in Commercial Photographer Devon

As a commercial photographer in Devon I believe I can produce the dynamic pictures your business needs!. With nearly twenty years of photographic experience I can provide high quality creative images, together with a friendly service. Contact James for a no obligation discussion or quote. Click commercial photographer to see my commercial photography.

A note about this image;
This image was taken from the top of the mast of the Grand Bank Schooner Highlander. The vessel was racing during the Antigua Classics sailing regatta. Having rounded the windward mark I started my ascent up the rigging. Only when reaching the top could I clip on a safety line. Time was ticking away as we raced for the leeward mark. I knew I had to be back on deck before we rounded the mark and started punching into the lively seas. Framing a shot is not easy when everything is moving. There was another problem too. I was using a very wide angle lens (17mm) and much of the frame was taken up with my own feet! With no time to spare I let go with one hand and leaned out away from the rigging, with the camera at arms length. I fired off some frames then beat a hasty retreat!
The photo was used as a double page spread in Yachting World magazine.

Aerial photographer South West England

Posted: 19th February 2013 by James Walker Photography in Aerial photographer

James Walker is an aerial photographer in South West England. This aerial photo was taken on route from Salcombe to Liskeard in a Castle Air jetranger helicopter. I was commissioned to take aerial photos a beautiful waterside property that will come to the market soon.
This photograph is of Burgh Island with Bigbury and Bantham in the background. The image illustrates well the diversity of coastline we have in South West England. Rugged cliffs, shallow tidal estuaries, sandy beaches, as well as safe deep water rivers such as the Dart.

Aerial Photos of Devon as Prints

I offer aerial photos as prints up to 3ft x 4ft in size and the quality is amazing. I plan to make a page for the website showing examples of these prints. They make great wall art for offices or the home. Click aerial photography in South West England to see more of my aerial photos.

Here are my top 10 photo locations from my recent travels. I have a love of travel, and a passion for wilderness. Landscape photography allows me to try and capture a moment in time, in the hope of being able to rekindle the experience in my mind on those dark and wet winters days. Each of these images represents a wonderful moment in time to me, when all the elements come together, the landscape, the light, and the photography. They are the moments that I live for…….

The observant amongst you may have noticed that I have only posted nine images because I want to know where you would add as the tenth. Please let me know in the comment box below.

For those starting out on learning to take landscape photographs here are a few photo tips;

Improve your chances of taking a great landscape shot by planning, watch the weather forecasts, plan where you need the sun to be, check the tide table, study google earth if its a new location to you.

Start thinking more about the quality of light and less about the quantity of light. It is not all about getting the camera out only on the glorious sunny summers day, often dawn and dusk can produce the best light. Some of the best photos I’ve taken have been after the sun has gone down at dusk. Set up the camera on a tripod and take a series of images as the light drops away. Put the camera on self timer and keep shooting as the light drops away until you are using exposure times of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 seconds and compare the results on your computer, you maybe pleasantly surprised with the results. Long exposures work well when taking seascapes and rivers as the resulting images will have a ‘milky’ water which often looks atmospheric. It is a simple effect that can be beautiful.

In order for a landscape photographer to really capture the moment they must learn to use filters. I don’t mean tacky filters take produce cheap effects but rather the use of graduated neutral density filters.  A set of ND filters will quickly become your best friend, they come in .3 (one stop), .6 (two stops), .9 (three stops). The best quality are made by Lee Filters, but they don’t come cheap! The filters help to control the quantity of light hitting an area of the sensor thereby controlling the contrast, allowing the photographer to record a greater range of tones from deep shadows through to bright highlights such as the clouds. With a little experimentation the photographer will learn to use them in a subtle way to create atmospheric images. All of the above images have been taken using neutral density filters.

Leading on from above it is essential to ‘get it right in camera’. I come from a background of working on transparency film where there was no choice but to get it right in the camera. To put it simply you can’t add later what you didn’t record at the time. Yes I know for some photoshop is the answer to all mistakes, but it is time consuming, meaning you are not out there taking pictures.

Creative photographer in Devon
Here are a couple of images of my daughter Sophie, one aged six, the other aged twelve. Both are taken with the fiction book market in mind. THE MEMORY OF LOVE has recently been published in the USA, and was marketed by the picture library Arcangel Images. I have been photographing my children since day one, slowly building a body of work, and creating a record of their childhood. Please contact me if you are interested in my portrait photography

These images are sold worldwide to book publishers by Trevillion Images and Arcangel Images. I in turn pay my kids a commission on every sale, and this is starting to pay dividends for them. In the last quarter images of Sophie have sold in the UK, USA, Australia, Norway, and Portugal. My twelve year old daughter collected a tidy sum!

Night Photography in Umbria

Posted: 20th September 2012 by james walker in Expedition photographer

Night photography and wild camping in a beautiful place kind of go together, and I think this shot kind of sums up why!

It was taken on a mountain (at 1600m) in Umbria, near the town of Castelluccio. I will be posting more images from the family trip around Europe in due course.

Technical Notes

The exposure was 40mins at F8 (400 iso) using a 17mm lens. Before taking this picture i first worked out the correct exposure for the tent which is lit by a LED torch. This only needed a two minute exposure in order to get the glowing light.
The camera was set up on the tripod and once the exposure had reached the the two minute duration, I switched off the light and went to sleep, leaving the camera to record the beautiful night sky.

Would I swop a night in my tent for a bed in a five star hotel?…..I think not!

Commercial Photographer – Hanging around

Posted: 7th June 2012 by james walker in Commercial photographer

As a commercial photographer I never quite know where the next location will be. That’s part of the challenge, and I like the demands that makes. I was thrown in at the deep end (!) when asked to photograph equipment at a water treatment plant for STQ Safety. Unable to use my own 240 volt lighting equipment in that environment I worked with a combination of battery operated flash, daylight, and 110V tungsten worklamps kindly supplied by South West Water.

The equipment is designed to allow maintenance workers to access empty water tanks safely. It can also be used to recover an injured person in an emergency as this picture shows. A successful shoot, although some people said there was too much hanging around!
